A Welcomed Enemy

It’s not every day that you celebrate a division rival getting better. But in this case, I’m going to make the exception. Earlier today it was reported that Michael Vick has signed with the Eagles:

Quarterback Michael Vick has signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, his agent, Joel Segal, confirmed to ESPN.com. Vick arrived in Philadelphia Tuesday morning and remained there Wednesday evening. The Eagles will hold a news conference on Friday morning to announce his signing. The first year of the deal is for $1.6 million with an option for the second year at $5.2 million.

Vick can immediately take part in preseason practices, workouts and meetings and can play in the final two preseason games. Once the season begins, Vick may participate in all team activities except games, and Goodell said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 (Oct. 18-19) at the latest.

Now, as a supporter of the Giants (though I’m a Jets fan first and foremost), this isn’t exactly welcomed news. The Eagles just added depth to their roster in the form of a dangerous, versatile weapon. However, as a believer that people deserve second chances, I couldn’t be happier. I’m glad the Eagles gave him the opportunity to redeem himself. He has already paid his debt to society, so let’s move on. Granted, I would have been happier if he was in some other division, but the fact that he has a shot as redeeming himself on the football field is great.
